Case Applications for Forest Resource Assessment Using Airborne Laser Scanner
نویسنده
چکیده
Three case applications for forest resource assessment using airborne laser scanner (LiDAR) will be introduced. The first case is “assessment of high density forest area”. The area where forest maintenance is necessary is extracted using colour composite of three layers developed from laser point group; (1) attained distance from DSM into forest (2) tree height (3) reflection intensity. The second case is “applied counting method for the number of trees”. The method is based on local maximum filtering but improved to be able to calculate the distribution of multi-storied forest by analyzing laser point group. This method is also able to count the number of lower storied trees by considering the area. The third case is “extracting hazard area facing fallen trees”. The risk of fallen trees into conservation area (houses and roads) is evaluated by calculating the location and height of trees using local maximum filter and buffering the tree height from the tree location. * Corresponding author. Airborne laser data for stand delineation and information extraction
A literature review of new publications in the field of 3D data for forest applications shows that the application of airborne laser scanner data (ALS) is in the focus of research today due to its great potential for practical applications. While there is a lot of research carried out to derive forest management parameters based on laser metrics deduced from a single tree assessment or a statis...
متن کاملAlgorithms and Methods of Airborne Laser Scanning for Forest Measurements
Extracting forest variables from airborne laser scanner has less than 10 years of history. During that time, however, a new area in the field of forest studies has emerged. This paper describes existing algorithms and methods of airborne laser scanning that are used for forest measurements. The methods are divided into the following categories: 1) extraction of DTM (digital terrain model), 2) e...
متن کاملUsing Airborne Laser Scanner Data in Forestry Management: a Novel Approach to Single Tree Delineation
Lately, laser scanning even of huge areas has become economically sensible due to new airborne laser-scanners delivering higher resolutions and measurement frequency. In this paper we will describe a novel approach for single tree delineation based on airborne laser-scanner-data for use in forestry applications. This currently leads into the development a forestry management tool as a part of a...
متن کاملEstimating Forest Structure Indices for Evaluation of Forest Bird Habitats by an Airborne Laser Scanner
Bird species diversity is affected by the vertical and horizontal diversity of forest structure; therefore, several indices of forest structure have been proposed for the evaluation of bird habitats. If these indices could be measured in a wide area by remote sensing, it would be very useful for wildlife habitat assessment. The indices that we evaluated based on whether they can be estimated fr...

Airborne laser scanning is an applicable method to derive digital terrain models (DTMs) in wooded terrain. A considerable amount of the laser points are re°ections on the tree tops (vegetation points). Thus, special ¯ltering algorithms are required to obtain the ground surface. Earlier, we proposed to use iterative linear prediction. We review existing methods and compare them to our approach. ...
